This collection centers around the life of Elizabeth (Betty) P. MacDonald’s (Heppner)(McIntosh) Prior married names who graduated from the prestigious Punahou School in Hawaii [ Other distinguished graduates include: Sun Yat-sen (1883) & President Barack Obama (1979). ]
Betty was living in Honolulu when Pearl Harbor was bombed 12/7/1941. She was on location where the USS Arizona was sunk the next day.
A few days later, she was named Scripps Howard war correspondent for Pacific under Admiral Chester Nimitz's command.
The next year she was offered the job of Washington correspondent covering Eleanor Roosevelt and the White House.
In 1943 Betty was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and became involved with Morale Operations (MO) the so-called "black" propaganda in WWII, which today is often called disinformation.
Betty was assigned to support MO teams behind enemy lines and relocated to China.
Some of the personal items we have for auction include several personal scrapbooks that show photographs from inside China during WWII, a Rare picture of General Donovan in China at the new OSS Headquarters in China, many photos of soldiers and war zones most with documentation.
